Second WR Book Title: Small Island by Andrea Levy

Small Island, By Andrea Levy (Picador 2005)
Winner of the 2004 Orange Prize for Fiction
Winner of the Whitbread Novel Award and Whitbred Book of the Year
Winner of the 2005 Commonwealth Writer’s Prize for Best Book

Which small island is Andrea Levy referring to in her fourth and multi-prize winning novel, which has swept the UK, Commonwealth and now North America with its captivating story? Centered around two young Jamaican immigrants—Gilbert Joseph and Hortense Roberts, and two young London residents—Queenie Bligh and Bernard, the book drifts from the sweetly scented colors and musical accents of the Caribbean to the muted urban quotidian coherence of London, circa WWII.

Levy deftly portrays the hopes and dreams, travails and injustices heaped on both sides of the Immigrant/Mother-Country equation; a scenario seemingly familiar to us all—but which begs reminding what grace and amity can exist amidst prejudice and enmity. At a time when civil rights in America were beginning to brew, people of color in other parts of the world were received with a mixture of curiosity and distrust. Levy captures the pride, fear, courage and resolve, (her own parents served as models for the characters).
