Whistler Reads is the community literary organization founded by Paula Shackleton in 2005 fashioned on the “one book - one city” concept. The group meets to discuss a new book on the first Thursday of every odd month—roughly every 8 weeks, often in the presence of the author or by phone. Whistler Reads now boasts close to 200 members. In an effort to garner even more participation among the community, the merchants and resort users she has instituted a fun new literary challenge.

What is the Whistler Reads Challenge?
The WR Challenge is an initiative to foster a broader literary community through the social interactive of a lively book group combined with the competitive spirit for which Whistler is so renowned. We want to see how many people we can get to register with WR and read the books before the next respective meeting, Sept 15th. Go to and click on WHISTLER READS for instructions on how to join. We encourage groups to challenge reciprocal clubs, groups and business: The Whistler Pique to challenge The Whistler Question newspapers. Solaris Spa to challenge The Four Seasons. Intrawest Corporation to challenge Whistler Blackcomb Corporation.

The September book selection is "THE END OF EAST" by Vancouver author, Jen Sookfong Lee. This fascinating novel spans three generations of Chinese immigrants as told through the eyes of her twenty-year old female protagonist. The End of East (Knopf, Canada) is from the publisher's series launching the voice of new writers. That program introduced these well-loved Canadian writers: Ann Marie MacDonald and Yann Martel, to name only two.

Deadline for entries is Sept 14th. 12pm midnight. The groups will be rated according to number of people signed-up, number of people who complete the book, the success of their challenge to another group. Stay tuned for prizes and further event announcements.
