Readers often become writers. Consider taking a writing program. Most colleges offer writing programs either for credit or as part of a continuing education program. Here are some online programs and resources for aspiring writers.

  • Federation of BC Writers: programs & services to members including professional development, competitions, public reading opportunities and publc advocacy.
  • A self-publishing company that has developed a computer program that can predict the success of a title based on attributes examined from 700 New York Times bestselling fictions over 50 years.
  • Poets & Writers Magazine: a resource for creative writers, the magazine publishes essays on the literary life and interviews along with practical articles for emerging and established writers. The magazine also sponsors publishing seminars available via e-mail or audiotapes. On the P&W site are comprehensive links to other resources, including literary grants and awards, organizations, and literary publications.
  • Writers Conferences & Centers Online: a feature of the Association of Writing Programs, this region-by-region directory of writing conferences and centers in the United States is annotated with full contact information, dates, and fees. Recommended for looking up established centers.
  • Writers Conferences & Workshops: from Shaw's Guide, search over 1,400 conferences and workshops around the world by month, by location, or by focus. Note: this site/directory is advertiser sponsored.
  • the website of Writer's Digest, the publisher of Writer's Digest, the leading magazine for writers, Writer's Market, the bible for writers seeking publication, and Writers Digest Books, a series instructional writing books. The free site offers daily market updates, searchable database of writers guidelines, and, of course, Writer's Digest products, including online workshops and live writing seminars throughout the country.
  • Writing  It  Real: an online magazine on writing from personal experience, is a subscription service that offers articles, instruction, guides, and resources. You can sample some free articles on the home page.

  • The Authors Guide: Established in 1919, the Guild works on behalf of its members to lobby for free speech, copyrights, and other issues of concern to authors.
  • a web resource for communication professionals.  Insights and experiences of other writers, editors and documentation specialists.
  • PEN USA: The international organization of poets, playwrights, essayists, novelists (for the original letters in the acronym PEN), television and screen writers, critics, historians, editors, journalist, and translators has a twofold goal: to protect the rights of writers around the world and to foster a vital literary community. This link is for the US branch.
  • Women In Film: A creative community of peers whose focus is on writing within the entertainment industry.
