Eight Classic Books Inspire Readers All Summer Long

LOS ANGELES, CA. (June 26, 2003) —  Everyone has a list of classic books they've always meant or wanted to read and summer is the perfect time to get started., the online resource for book groups, is showcasing eight must-read classic books to inspire readers in a Summer of Classic Reading Promotion that offers a chance to win free books in September.

"Most book groups take a break in summer, spending two months on one book," said Paula Shackleton, President and Founder of "This is a perfect opportunity to become absorbed in a classic work. These are wonderful and important books that we believe everyone will enjoy reading and discussing."

To inspire individual readers as well as book discussion groups, is featuring a different classic book each week of the summer, offering authoritative and accessible resource links for each title including reader and teacher's guides, author and historical background information, and literary analyses. The list of classic titles spans literary eras and genres: The Odyssey by Homer; The Tale of Genji by Murasaki Shibuki; Pickwick Papers by Charles Dickens; Anna Karenina by Leo Tolstoy; To the Lighthouse by Virginia Woolf; Their Eyes Were Watching God by Zora Neale Hurston; and The Collected Novellas of Gabriel García Márquez.

Consumers who join during the Summer of Classic Reading (July and August) will be entered into a random entry drawing to win 10 free copies of another classic book, The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie by Muriel Spark, for their book group in September.

"Read one or more classic books this summer and then go 'back to school' with the one of the most famous teachers in literature—Miss Jean Brodie!" said Shackleton.
