Whistler Reads: A Village-wide Reading Initiative "The city that skis together now reads together!"

Whistler, BC. (February 28th 2005)—Whistler is a diverse community of permanent residents, vacation home-owners, long and short term visitors and employees.  While active outdoor activities vie for our attentions, reading is also a big contender.  BookBuffet's President Paula Shackleton is joined by a team of interested citizens, writers and corporate sponsors to bring notable authors bi-monthly to town to speak to book groups—by organizing coffee-house meetings and education events at venues across town, the online community resource takes its web resources a step further with The Whistler Reads program.

Membership to is free. Access to the Whistler Reads  book group connects members to the community home page and venue dates and listings.  As well they get to access book archives, book news, feature articles, and forums to discuss literary issues with like-minded readers.

Employers sign-up for the level of sponsorship matching the number of employee participants; books are distributed to them as well as via the coffee shops and venues where people meet to discuss the book.

Leaders are identified in the community and trained to moderate public discussions, armed with reading group guides, group dynamic training and author bio information.

The inaugeral title is the Canada Reads selection, Rockbound by Frank Parker Day (University of Toronto Press 1989), destined to become a Canadian Classic.

The tri-annual schedule allows 4 weeks to read, 4 weeks to discuss.  Viewing of the movie (VF) will be scheduled and author readings, discussions and book signings will all be part of the Whistler Reads initiative.
