Graham Greene Centenary: October 2, 2004

abstract:October 2, 2004, marks the centenary of one of the twentieth century’s most important literary figures: Graham Greene. In volume three, Norman Sherry brings this magisterial biography—twenty-seven years in the making—to a close. Catch up on all things Greene...

September 30, 2004
— Graham Greene fans will undoubtedly want to celebrate the centennial of his birth by stacking copies of his wonderful books (listed at bottom) at their bedside, and plowing through the lot over the course of this month. Eight of the best novels are to be republished in Britain by Vintage on October 7th, with introductions by contemporary authors, including J.M. Coetzee, Paul Theroux and Zadie Smith. So many titles have been made into movies, most recently The Quiet American, that we've listed the links to the films as well.

The Biographic Trilogy

Mr Sherry dogedly visits the locations of all of Greene's novels written after 1955. This takes him to the source of some of the author's best work. Sherry shows Greene at the height of his fame, in the company of other literary luminaries such as T. S. Eliot, Evelyn Waugh, Ian Fleming, and Noël Coward.

Through unparalleled access to letters, to diaries, and to Greene himself, Sherry reveals with insight and eloquence Greene’s obsessions, his complicated religious feelings, and most significantly, his art. This volume, with its wealth of new and surprising details, brings to a close what Margaret Atwood called "the definitive biography."
