NEA Brings the Largest Ever Tour of Shakespeare

abstract:

The National Endowment for the Arts presents Shakespeare in American Communities, the largest tour of Shakespeare in American history. Shakespeare in American Communities will bring professional Shakespeare productions and related educational activities to more than 100 small and mid-sized communities in all 50 states.

If children read one play in their lives in school it will likely be by Shakespeare.  That is the reason the NEA decided to devote funds to this initiative which has selected seven theatre companies to tour 120 venues from September 2004 through October 2004.

Educational outreach is an integral component of both phases of the intiative.  25,000 multimedia educational resource kits for teachers can be ordered free of charge from the educators resource page.  The audio CD features interviews and recitations by James Earl Jones, Michael York, and Jane Alexander among others.  A 25-minute video, Shakepseare in Our Time, explores the Bard, his work and his times with clips from many films based on his plays.

In Canada & The UK

Stratford Festival: That Stratford Ontario is home to the largest classical repertory theatre in North America is ultimately attributable to the dream of one man, Stratford-born journalist Tom Patterson who conceived the idea in 1950. The first night of July 13, 1953 actor Alec Guinness spoke the opening lines of Richard III. It now draws more than 600,000 people each year between April and November with extensive educational and enrichment opportunities for schools, as well as operating a Conservatory for Classical Theatre Training.

Stratford-Upon-Avon: The birthplace of Shakespeare, steeped in culture and history.  If you're planning a trip to Europe this summer, this is a must.

So pick-up a copy of Shakespeare's plays, find a performance in your area and take your friends, family, children or grandchildren.
