East of Eden with Oprah
Oprah brings back her Book Club with John Steinbeck's epic novel that follows the destinies of the Hamilton and Trask families as they re-enact the fall of Adam and Eve and the poisonous rivalry of Cain and Abel.
June 19, 2003 — In selecting Steinbeck's East of Eden, Oprah stated: "I love this book! It's the perfect book for summer. It's a saga...it's so good! You won't be able to turn the pages fast enough. I brought the book club back to share this jewel of a novel."
Readers will have all summer to finish the novel, as Oprah's first new Book Club will air on the Oprah Winfrey Show in September. In the meantime, readers who join Oprah's online Book Club community (free registration) can participate in weekly Q&A sessions with a literary guide who will select five member questions to answer each week.
The East of Eden on-air show will be "on the road"—filmed in Steinbeck country (Salinas, California). For the first time, viewers can travel with Oprah's Book Club and be featured on the Oprah Winfrey Show by sending a letter or video about themselves and how the book affected them to the following address:
Oprah's Book Club
PO Box 617640
Chicago, IL 60661
Unlike her previous Book Club, which recommended new fiction on a monthly basis, Oprah's new club will focus on great reads, picking just four or five titles a year. Oprah's new Book Club also has a revamped online component that offers members (free registration) a weekly e-mail from Oprah on the current book, an opportunity to create an online discussion group, and a feature to find a book club in their own neighborhood. Members can also listen in as Oprah reads her favorite passages, participate in weekly Q&A with literary experts, and take advantage of other interactive features on every book selection.
"The book club is back and I am on a mission. My mission is to make this the biggest book club in the world and get people reading again. Not just reading, but reading great books!"
