PEN Awards Announced May 1

abstract:                                                                                   Philip Roth has been awarded the $20,000 PEN/Nabokov award for "a living author whose body of work, either written in or translated into English, represents achievement in a variety of literary genres and is of enduring originality  and consummate craftsmanship."  Mr. Roth will receive his award May 22 at New York’s Lincoln Center.

The PEN American Center, a national association of literary writers announced its annual awards on May 1.  Other highlights include the PEN/Voelcker Award for poetry, presented to Linda Gregg, and the Ralph Manheim Medal for Translation went to Edith Grossman. About the Recipient:

Philip Milton Roth (born March 19, 1933, Newark, New Jersey) is a Jewish-American novelist who is best known for his 1959 collection, Goodbye, Columbus, his explicit comedic novel Portnoy's Complaint (1969) and a trilogy comprised of American Pastoral (1997), which won the Pulitzer Prize, I Married a Communist (1998), and The Human Stain (2000) (Vintage International). Most of his novels are set in Newark and portray the Jewish experience, tackling issues like assimilation, Zionism, and anti-Semitism. (Source: The Philip Roth Society)
