DIASPORA: The Year's Most Notable Jewish Book

Depicting Jewish communities in over 40 countries, Frederic Brenner's opus is the culmination of 25 years of photography.

September 06, 2003
— Jane Friedman, CEO of HarperCollins says Diaspora: Exiles from the Homeland is the "the most important book [she has] published in over 35 years," and expects the book to achieve the long lasting popularity of universal photography books such as The Family of Man by Edward Steichen.

Diaspora is a two-volume masterwork. Volume I numbers 344 pages and contains 262 photographs, a true visual narrative of Jewish life. Natalie Danforth, reviewing the title in Publishers Weekly Fall 2003 Announcements issue, noted that the "vast spectrum of lifestyles and social conditions, from antique to postmodern, tribal, medieval, industrial... spanning the spectrum of time and space". Accompanying the photographic volume is Volume II, 164 pages of essays by leading intellectuals. The two-volume book carries a hefty price tage of $100, but for a landmark work, well worth it.

Frederic Brenner is his own best promoter, he has amassed over 80,000 images and put together a slide show that will introduce his exibit by the same name at The Brooklyn Museum of Art, October 3, 2003 (scroll down mid page). Diaspora will be sold in the museum shop instead of a catalogue.
