Property wins out... American writer Valerie Martin is the surprise winner of the UK's Orange Prize for Fiction, which recognizes women authors.
June 08, 2003 — The Orange Prize was established following the 1991 Man Booker Prize shortlist that contained no women authors. Now in its 8th year, the prize celebrates the excellence of women's writing. The winner of the Orange Prize receives £30,000 and a limited edition bronze figurine known as "Bessie".
This year, London Bookies had American writer Valerie Martin as their third pick to take home Bessie.
