Wine & Book Group Pick for June '07

abstract:For June's Wine & Book Group pick we couldn't resist the novel that bumped The Da Vinci Code off of its number one spot on the New York Times Bestsellers List. The Birth House: A Novel (William Morrow 2006) by Ami McKay is a story about midwifery, with all its controversy and struggles, set in the 1900s in a small town in Nova Scotia with the story-telling tradition of Annie Proulx.

  • About theAuthor

Ami McKay was born and raised "in the cornfields" of Indiana and got her degree in Music Education at the University of Indiana where she also attended graduate studies. Her first job was music teacher at an inner-city school in Chicago.

A single mother and closet-writer who delayed serious wordsmith aspirations during this hectic phase, Ami eventually landed a Canadian husband and moved to Scot's Bay, Nova Scotia, in 2000. While waiting for residency papers, she began a serious letter-writing initiative and the first success landed her a spot on Oprah!

Next came a "Writing for Radio" course and a new career in freelance writing and documentaries for CBC radio. An apprenticeship in the 2003 Writers' Federation of Nova Scotia's mentorship program led her to write the first draft of her first novel, The Birth House, which derived from her contact with the local Scot's Bay midwife during the peri-natal phase and home-birth of her second child.

    About the Book

     A #1 Bestseller in Canada
Now in its 21st week on bestseller lists across Canada including The Globe and Mail, the Canadian Booksellers Association, Maclean's and the Toronto Star.
The Birth House: A Novel is a glimpse into pre-industrial, pastoral Canada, and a period of history left largely unexplored in current literature -- a time when the medical establishment set out to eliminate midwifery and exert authority over women's bodies, and pregnancy was deemed a "medical condition." In clear and eloquent prose, The Birth House reveals the lives of women in the early 20th century -- their struggle for independence, recognition, and autonomy.—Author's press release
