Penguin Promotes Its Non-Fiction Backlist

abstract:Fiction and non-fiction used to carry relatively equal weight with book sellers, publishers and the compilers of bestseller lists.   Until recently, fiction was the more dashing, glamorous side but non-fiction has started to produce stars which publishing companies are wanting to promote from their backlist.

— One such series, entitled "Great Ideas" is offered by Penguin who is promoting them as, "Works that changed the world."  You'll find them on paperback carosels in the shops where great minds of philosophy, history and literary biography are offered with appealing covers depicting classic art reproductions which scream collect me.  As well, Penguin afficianados can expect superior binding with ease of opening and handling, even on their paperbacks, producing a visual and tactile experience.  

Philip Hensher of The Observer (8.29.2004) writes a detailed account of how the phenomenon has occurred and how readers are being enticed to purchase non-fiction.
