Early Stories Wins the PEN/Faulkner Award

abstract:John Updike's short story collection The Early Stories has been selected for the 2004 PEN/Faulkner Award for Fiction.

— The award is the most recent in a long list of deserved prizes for John Updike, the author of more than fifty books, including twenty novels and numerous collections of short stories, poems, and criticism.


Containing most of the stories published between 1953 and 1975, John Updike: The Early Stories was described by PEN/Faulkner Award Judge Ron Carlson as "[A]n astonishing display of what prose should be and what it can do. While there is no single galvanizing historical event, nevertheless Updike tells us what we were like as the 20th century bumped along."

All five authors will be honored during the 24th annual PEN/Faulkner Award ceremony at the Folger Shakespeare Library (Washington, DC) on Saturday, May 8, at 7 P.M. Tickets for the event are $100 and can be purchased by phoning the Folger Box Office at (202) 544-7077.
