Timely Reads from the Rand Institute

abstract:The RAND Institute is the original socio-political and scientific think tank. Everyone who read A Beautiful Mind by Sylvia Nasar, or saw the movie based on the book, is familiar with the story of the Nobel Prize-winning mathematician, John Nash. Nash worked at RAND, the scientific think tank established in 1946.

An acronym for "research and development," RAND is a non-profit institution that helps improve policy and decision-making through research and analysis. Much of this research is available to the general public through the institute's publications.

Residents in Whistler, BC are being treated to a visit by Graham Fuller - CIA and RAND Corporation Expert Sunday July 22 Spruce Grove Field House Public Talk and Forum at 4:30 Friends of the Forum BBQ at 6 pm. — If you didn't know it, you would walk right past the RAND corporation located on the palisade bluffs of Santa Monica overlooking the beaches and the Pacific Ocean beyond.

BookBuffet visited the Santa Monica offices of the RAND as panelists on a publishing forum on “The Impact of Book Groups on the Publishing Industry". The evening was hosted by John Warren, head of Marketing for RAND Publications in Santa Monica, California.

John had on hand a collection of the institute’s latest and note-worthy publications. Here are a few that captured our interest as being timely and certain to make for provocative book group discussions.

You can log on to the RAND website to download these publications in PDF format for personal use or to order hard copies.

In addition to key research and analyses in defense and national security arenas, RAND offers publications on the following topics:

  • Child Policy
  • Civil and Criminal Justice
  • Community/Regional
  • Drug Policy
  • Education
  • Health
  • Infrastucture
  • International Policy
  • Methodology
  • Population and Aging
  • Science and Technology
  • Terrorism

Visit the RAND Publications website for some thought- and discussion-provoking works on the leading issues of the day.
