Whistler Reads: Join the July 22nd Google Hangout!

abstract:We at Whistler Reads love technology and innovation. Since so many of the group spend different parts of the summer away with several of us packing up entirely… the best method I can think of for "getting together" is through Google Hangout. (I've detailed instructions on Google Hangout at the bottom - click full article to view them.)

If you haven't done it before, it's easy to start. I've also posted a group notice on Meet Up to help spread the word about our online session. Just type "Whistler Reads" in the Meet Up search box and our event will appear. (Use Meet Up to find all sorts of interesting gatherings in the vicinity, by postal code, by radius or by topic of interest for locations worldwide, etc.)

Our discussion takes place on July 22nd from 7-8 pm. DO check in and post a message about what you are reading this summer. We'll tally the recommendations and send the list in our next newsletter.

With new Anti-SPAM legislation, we've all been bombarded with requests from existing subscription groups to remain opted-in. Ours is on its way. If you do not receive a request, we've likely got an outdated or incorrect email for you, in which case, take this time to re-connect. We only send out messages to announce the next book, the location and pertinent event details.

In the meantime, enjoy your summer reading adventure! Paula Shackleton

— To use Google Hangouts you'll need:

  • A Google+ account
  • Webcam
  • Microphone
  • Speakers or headphones

N.B. A Google Plus+ account is different than a Google e-mail address account - and guess what? You don't need a google email to use Google + (phew, evil empire!)
N.N.B. Most laptops come with a webcam and internal 2-way speakers, so the headphones are optional.

Creating a Google Plus+ Account

In order to use Google Hangouts you will need to register for a Google+ account. If you already have one you can use the same login to access Google Hangouts. If you do not have a Gmail account, you do NOT need to create one, you can just sign up for a Google+ account with your email address (from any domain, including Yahoo, Hotmail, AOL, etc.) and a password.

Important: All invitations to Google Hangouts will come to the email that you have provided Google Plus. Makes sense, right? You must be signed into the Google account associated with that same email address or you will not be able to join the Google Hangout. When you are logged in to Google+, you can see which email address is logged in by looking in the upper right-hand corner of your screen.

Signing up with Google

  1. Go to https://plus.google.com
  2. If you already have a Google+ account, sign in with your email and password. Otherwise, click on the Sign Up button to sign up with Google.
  3. Fill in all of the required form fields to sign up for the account and click Create My Account.

You may need to install a plugin before your first Hangout. If that's the case, you can download the plugin here.

    Starting a Hangout

Once your account is set up, there are a few ways you can start a hangout:
Go to plus.google.com/hangouts and click the Start a Hangout button on the top right side of your screen.
Click the Hangouts icon on the left side of the page and click Start a hangout under the "Hangout Invite" section. You'll be taken to an invite screen where you'll be able to:

    1. Make sure your mic and camera are working correctly by looking at your video feed at the bottom of the page. You should be able to see yourself in the video feed, and when you talk, you should see a green bar appear at the bottom of your video. If you’re having issues with your mic or camera, try these troubleshooting steps.

    2. Invite entire circles or specific individuals to join you in your hangout. Learn more about inviting people to your hangout.

    Tips for Common Problems

    1. Reboot your computer.

    2. Use Google Chrome as your browser (sometimes Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, and Safari have more problems). Download here.

    3. If you're using Mac OS X 10.5.8 or below, the best option is to use Opera as your browser. Download here.

    4. Sign out of all your accounts. Make sure you sign in to only one account and make sure that account is the email address you provided to "Whistler Reads".

    5. Add anyone you are trying to hang out with to your Google+ Circles.
