Oprah's Book Club Returns
After almost a year's hiatus, Oprah Winfrey announced that she is reviving her book club with a new focus: classics.
March 02, 2003 — Tentatively titled "Traveling with the Classics," Oprah Winfrey revealed that her new book club will focus on classic literary works and will feature only three to five authors a year to afford readers time to immerse themselves in a particular book or books by the selected author. The book club will also have a new format: each show will originate from a site related to the author or the book(s).
While no dates or selections have been announced, Oprah has posted a statement on her website asserting her commitment to this new book club:
"I cannot imagine a world where the great works of literature are not read. My hope is The Oprah Winfrey Show will make classic works of literature accessible to every woman and man who reads. ... I hope to invite readers throughout the world to visit or revisit a universe of books of enduring usefulness, because I believe that the sublimity of this experience, this gift to ourselves, is something that we owe to ourselves."
