New Website Directed at

abstract: is a new literary website launched Feb. 1, 2005 that offers news on African American authors, publishers and booksellers—one of the leading growth opportunity markets. Founder Ken Smikle said, "We have long recongnized the need for more trade information about African-Americans' rising profile in book publishing - not just as authors, but as publishing professionals, booksellers, agents and consumers."

Features & Categories

"Latest News," "In the Works," "Prize Winners," are some of the feature article categories. The first article in the main features section is the news of Random House's suit filed against P. Diddy Combs over the $300,000 advance for a memoir he never completed. The second article ironically announces a lucrative deal between Karinne Steffans and HarperCollins Amistad branch for her "tell-all, but also cautionary tale for young women who think that the life in the entertainment industry is all roses and no thorns."

Further down the line-up an article on the phenomenal success story of Andrea Levy and her dual prize winning novel, Small Island which has taken both British literary prizes, The Orange Prize (Best English-language novel written by a woman) and The Whitbred Prize, (which carries a prize of 30,000 British pounds.)

Under Bookselling News the New York Times No. 2 spot on the bestsellers list with Malcolm Gladwell's Blink

Halle Berry on Oprah promoting "Their Eyes Were Watching God" made for TV (March)

Shared Magazine Content

The whole right panel contains the online version for Black Issues - Sixth Issue January-February offers a cover story Memoir of a 21st Century History Maker, Illinois Senator Barack Obama became the fifth African American to serve in the U.S. Senate, and his newly reprinted memoir is stirring excitement and possibly destined to become an American Classic.

As the editors work out content sharing issues, they are unfortunately creating a bit of a schizophrenic experience for the web-browser as several features and articles click back to another website which has a whole different look and feel and is quite jarring to the user.  It would be better if they just ported content over to the new design on the existing website.

There are a few Departments on the left navigation bar that have no content but are in progress.

Overall I look forward to keeping abreast of African-American literary news and information with this site and we have added it to the BookBuffet Links and Resources for easy reference to Bookbuffet members interested in the latest information in this exciting sector.
