Book Group Dinner Meetings at Barbara Jo's

Before breaking for July and August each summer our book group picks a cook book, divies up recipes, and meets for a sumptuous meal, great wine and conversation.  For the past three years running we have left all the work up to the good people at Barbara Jo's Books to Cooks—a cook book store slash demonstration kitchen that hosts events with food prepared by one of the shop's exquisite chefs. They instruct and serve dishes from our chosen book. This year's pick was Tarte Tatin and the menu was...

July 01, 2005

Deceptively Simple & Delicious!

Salted Spanish Almonds

Scallion Bread p234

Raw Beet Salad p50

Belgian Endive Saland with Lemon and Garlic Vinaigrette p69

Chicken with Sorrel p67

Rosemary Baked Potatoes p121

The meal was accompanied by a choice of yummy white and red wines, with fresh tarte of mixed berries and crème fréshe. Susan Loomis' books embody almost everyone's dream of living in France and operating a cooking school while enjoying the countryside living avec joie

Barbara Jo is a 25 year veteran food professional who has been honored for her lifetime achievements and serves on the prestigeous James Beard cookbook selection committee for the James Beard Awards.

Not in Vancouver? Look for a similar book store or cooking school in your area willing to host your dinner meeting, and enjoy seeing your meal prepared while gabbing about the book and everything else! A great time to pick your long summer read, and start lining up next fall's list so you can order online a meeting in advance, take advantage of free delivery, and hand books out the meeting before you discuss them.

Barbara's Best Books (this month)

  • Vancovuer Cooks, Editor Jamie Maw (Douglas and McIntyre 2004) The top 50 chefs in the city share their favorite recipes and tips.
  • The Escoffier Cookbook, Auguste Escoffier (Chronicle 1941) The father of cooking, chef for kings and technique to die for: think classic.
  • Chef Salad, Bill Jones (Douglas and McIntyre 2003) For that just right summer menu.
  • Instant Cook, Donna Hay (Forth Estate 2004) Killer photos to inspire even the most reluctant chef.
