December 07, 2003 — Jane Austen was born on this day in 1775 at Steventon near Bassingstroke, Hampshire (England), the seventh child of the rector of the parish. As a girl she wrote stories, including burlesques of popular romances. Her novels have become enduring and beloved classics.
