Today is the birthday of Edgar Allan Poe (1809), master of the macabre.

Today is also the birthday of Patricia Highsmith (1921), the suspense/noir novelist. She is best known for her series featuring the ruthlessly amoral character, Ripley (The Talented Mr. Ripley), and the novel Strangers on a Train, which was the basis for Hitchcock's film of the same name.
