Perhaps it is fitting that Eugenides book about becoming (but not yet being), transforming (but not yet transformed) , descending (but not descended)--middleness--is itself not 100% successful. Still, this ambitious novel offers much discussion possiblities: historical perspectives, the nurture vs. nature debate, the use of 1st & 3rd person narrative voice, et. al.
